Friesland – Sloten
You have to pass through a bridge to get to Sloten. See the red and green lights in the picture? It means the bridge is being opend for you. And all the traffic on the road will have to wait for you. Cool, isn’t it?
There are many places where you can dock your boat in Sloten. We choose the spot beside the bridge, because there is always something to watch. But if you like it quieter you can stay in the small harbor.
Just across the bride is a windmill. And a beautiful one. And you can learn how to operate it. Or how it works and stuff. 🙂
The city was built 700 years ago at the crossing of a land and a water way. So the original city hat four gates. Two at the waterway and two at the land way. Not all of them are still around, but this one is:
Life here seems to be very relaxed. There are a few nice restaurants and pubs, some shops and a great fish&chips. I love the fish here. It is so fresh and even if they fry it, it is never greasy.
I guess not very much has changed in the 700 years the city is around.
Even some of the people living there are still dressed a very old fashiond way.
And at night there are several restaurants to go to or you just could have a walk around the canal.
So don’t miss this town, like we did, the first time we were here. It is really great to be here.
